Electrospinning Nanofibrous Sodium Alginate/β‐Cyclodextrin Composite Membranes for Methylene Blue Adsorption

Abstract: To effectively remove the toxic dyes from wastewater, sodium alginate (SA)/𝜷-cyclodextrin(𝜷-CD) nanofibrous composite membranes with average fiber diameters of 167-174 nm are obtained by an electrospinning method. The adsorption capacity of the SA/𝜷-CD membrane for methylene blue is 2776 mg g -1 , much higher than that of a pure SA membrane (1780 mg g -1 ). The incorporation of 𝜷-CD also improves the adsorption rate significantly. The adsorption mechanism is mainly the synergy of the electrostatic attracti… Show more

“…While the β-CD/PVDF composite film exhibited partial diffraction peaks of PVDF and β-CD at 20.24°and 27.31°, respectively. This phenomenon might arise from the influence of the organic solvent or high-voltage electric field during the electrospinning process, which affected the crystalline structure of β-CD, resulting in the disappearance of its partial diffraction peaks [44].…”

“…This phenomenon could be attributed to the presence of numerous active sites on the surface of films and the higher concentration gradient of Cu 2+ during the initial phase, which facilitated rapid binding with active sites [45]. However, as the adsorption time prolongs, these active sites gradually were occupied, resulting in a gradual approach towards equilibrium [44]. In comparison with the PVDF film, the addition of β-CD significantly enhanced the adsorption efficiency of Cu 2+ by β-CD/PVDF composite films, and the adsorption efficiency gradually increased with increasing β-CD content.…”
