Show more

“…None of the proxies used in this study suggested human presence in the catchment between 12,000 and 4500 cal. BP, while Marguet et al (2008) observed an expansion of lacustrine dwellings around the lakes Annecy, Bourget, and Aiguebelette during this period. Even if humans could have been present in the area of Lake La Thuile, their activities and possible settlement seem to have been too limited to leave a recordable footprint in the erosion dynamic.…”

“…yr BP (Carozza et al, 2015;Vital et al, 2014). The attraction of intermediate areas (Auvergne medium-elevation mountains), and of high mountains (Pyrenees, northern and southern Alps) causes a reorganisation of settlement around pastoral and hunting activities (Marguet et al, 2008;Walsh et al, 2006) or mining (Bailly-Maitre et al, 2008). This regional reorganisation could have had an impact on the soil and vegetation cover in partially abandoned low alluvial plains and northern Mediterranean coastal areas.…”

“…This long post-Neolithic quasi-millennial demographic depression has been discussed in the MRV, where more detailed information reveals a succession of drops in human impact with rhythms of 1 to 2 centuries, with a maximum decrease during the Middle Bronze Age (Figure 2, . The occupation of karstic caves/rock shelters then increases in the Northern Alps (Marguet et al, 2008), in the canyons of the Rhône (Donzère, Drôme), Ardèche, Cèze and Gard rivers (Vital, 1990. Its imprint is not very visible in the synthetic pollen diagrams (slight recovery of deciduous oak and coniferous wood and especially beech woods in BGZ III, and corresponds to a synchronous drop in anthropogenic indicators in BGZ II between 4000-3700 cal.…”

“…The Maurienne valley is a main transalpine route from the Savoyard Piedmont to the Italian foothills. Along with the Tarentaise valley, this is a real transversal transect across the Alps (Marguet et al 2008).…”

“…From prehistoric times onwards, this internal Alpine area was characterized by northern and Mediterranean cultural influences, visible through the excavated material culture, especially lithic arrowheads and ceramic vessels (Marguet et al 2008). Neolithic settlements from 4600 to 3400 BC, discovered in the nearby Tarentaise, for example, and particularly in the Bozel site, provide evidence of influences from the Wallis (Switzerland), the Italian Alps, the Po Plain, and the Rhone valley (Marguet et al 2008;Rey 2009Rey , 2016. For the 3rd millennium BC, similar conclusions can be drawn from the excavation at the Balmes Cave at Sollières-Sardières in Maurienne (Vital and Benamour 2012).…”
