Elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein in osteoarthritis of the knee: relationship with clinical findings and radiographic severity

Abstract: Erythrocyte sedimentation rate and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein concentration were higher in patients with knee osteoarthritis and were related to clinical features. In knee osteoarthritis, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein concentration may increase in early-stage KL-II.

“…8 ESR and high-sensitivity CRP were raised in patients with knee osteoarthritis and were correlated with clinical features. 9 Moreover it correlates well with the study of deOliveira et al that concentration of acute phase protein (APP) and CRP were raised in osteoarthritis when compared with normal population. 10 Antinuclear antibody (ANA) was positive in 2 (3.3%), one showed borderline positivity and in other it was strongly positive.…”

“…There is evidence that age and sex are associated with systemic inflammation (23,24), proprioception (25) and muscle strength (26). Radiographic Osteoarthritis has been shown to be associated with ESR and muscle strength (27,28); however, statistical analysis revealed it did not change the regression coefficients by more than 10% for any of the paths, therefore, it has not been included in the multivariable regression analysis. Evidence showing that pain is associated with ESR, proprioception or muscle strength is conflicting (18,29,30) or lacking (31,32).…”

“…Ireland 2005 16 and studies in Japan 2015 35,36 revealing that high-sensitivity CRP was associated with the K/L grade and early OA, furthermore increased serum CRP in early phases of OA suggests the presence of low-grade inflammation, which supports a pathophysiological role of inflammation at early stages of the disease process. But this was not observed by Sturmer et al 24 and Sowers et al 20 in which CRP was mostly related with late KOA and grade IV.…”
