Elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate is associated with metastatic disease and worse survival in patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma

Abstract: Abstract. Elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is common in cancer patients and it may affect survival. However, its clinical role and prognostic significance remain unknown in melanoma patients. The objective of the present study was to determine the clinical significance of the ESR levels in cutaneous melanoma patients. A total of 139 cutaneous melanoma patients were enrolled in this study and were retrospectively investigated. The median age of the patients was 52 years (range, 16-88 years). The me… Show more

“…Hematological biomarkers classified as routine laboratory tests are easily available and affordable. Serum C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS) are established as predictive values for numerous malignant tumors (Hefler et al, 2008;McMillan, 2013;Tas and Erturk, 2017). However, these markers were non-specific and may not always be available in secondary health services.…”

“…ESR is an evident prognostic factor badly affected the survival of cancer patients [60]. ESR is also a strong prognostic factor in cancers [61] like malignant mesothelioma.…”

“…The ESR assessment is widely used due to cost-effectivity and simple use although it is relatively low in sensitivity and less specific in its activity to monitor diseases. Thus, it becomes a feasible alternative to novel measure [26]. The commonly used anti-coagulant is Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acetic Acid (EDTA), which influences the plasmarelated activity of the dissolved protein.…”
