Elevated gaseous luminal nitric oxide and circulating IL-8 as features of Helicobacter pylori-induced gastric inflammation

Abstract: Background: Gastric nitric oxide (NO) production in response to Helicobacter pylori via inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) is suggested as a biomarker of inflammation and cytotoxicity. The aim of this study was to investigate relationships between gastric [NO], immunological biomarkers and histopathology. Materials and methods: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy was done in 96 dyspepsia patients. Luminal [NO] was measured by chemiluminescence. Biopsies were taken from gastric antrum and corpus for culture an… Show more

“…EDTA-plasma was separated from whole blood and immediately frozen at -80° C until assay. Following a signed sample transfer agreement approved by the national authority and following standard sample transportation procedures, specimens were sent to the Department of Medical Sciences, Gastroenterology and Hepatology Unit, Uppsala University, Sweden ( 17 ), for immunological assays. The same procedures were followed with the participants in the healthy control group, where 5 ml of blood was collected, and their sociodemographic and health-related data collected following their written consent.…”

“…The third calcium-independent isoform, iNOS, is expressed in response to inflammatory cytokines and bacterial virulence factors inducing the release of NO [ 40 , 71 ]. Over-production of NO triggers the pathogenesis of a variety of diseases including gastritis, and upregulation of iNOS levels has been observed in gastritis patients with H. pylori infection [ 72 , 73 ]. Interestingly, Nam et al showed that iNOS levels were significantly diminished after inhibition and eradication of H. pylori [ 74 ].…”
