Elevated Hydrogen Sulfide Levels in Vitreous Body and Plasma in Patients With Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy

Abstract: These results indicated that anti-vascular endothelial growth factor may downregulate the H2S level in the vitreous body, and H2S may play a role in the development of DR. Hydrogen sulfide may be a novel target for the therapy of DR.

“…29,30 Others describe that H 2 S may promote apoptosis of aortic smooth muscle cells, 31 and scavenges peroxynitrite 32 which contribute to the nitrosative stress, 33 and consequently to endothelial damage associated with this condition. 34 In our experiments, the T1D mice, non-obese, non-overweight and exhibiting an early Class I (like) diabetic nephropathy, exhibited elevated levels of plasma H 2 S ( Figure 1C,D), as reported for patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy 34,35 and cardiovascular disease. 36 It is important to emphasize that the amplified level of H 2 S was present in the renal cortex of T1D animals.…”

“…H 2 S is a known proangiogenic signaling molecule and can thereby also contribute to enhanced angiogenesis in the diabetic retina. In line with this, increased levels of H 2 S were observed in vitreous body of patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy compared with patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (94). The effects of H 2 S in the diabetic retina are schematically shown in Fig.…”

“…Plasma H 2 S levels in the patients as well as control subjects in our study are comparable with earlier studies which is within the range of 10 to100 micromol/l in human subjects. 5 Elevated hydrogen sulfide levels in plasma were also reported in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy 20 as well as patients with cardiovascular disease 21 cerebral ischaemic damage 22 and septic shock 23 M. Yusuf et al has earlier reported that the streptozotocin-induced diabetes in rat is associated with enhanced tissue hydrogen sulfide biosynthesis. 17 The activities of H 2 S producing enzymes and the tissue H 2 S contents are known to increase under diabetic conditions.…”
