Elevated serum angiotensin-converting enzyme activity in onchocerciasis

Abstract: Our objective was to measure serum angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity in patients with onchocerciasis. Serum ACE activity is commonly used in the diagnosis and follow-up of patients with sarcoidosis. However, serum ACE activity can also be elevated in a number of other granulomatous disorders. In onchocerciasis, a parasitic disease affecting millions of people in Africa and Central and South America, granulomatous tissue around adult worms has been identified, yet raised serum ACE activity has not be… Show more

“…34,35 Lung disease and some parasites can raise ACE; onchocerciasis, which is associated with elevated ACE, is endemic in Nigeria and might have contributed to the higher mean levels. 36 Using larger family sets, Rice et al 37 examined heterogeneity of the familial relationships for BP in the Quebec Family Study and the Tecumseh Community Health Study. With the Tau model, higher spouse correlations were detected for SBP in Quebec, with similar familiality (Ϸ40%), whereas for DBP, familiality was substantially higher in Quebec (Ϸ60%) than in Tecumseh (Ϸ25%), leading to the interpretation of a larger effect of household environment in Quebec.…”

“…Determination of fibroblast procollagen production in vitro and total lung collagen in vivo. Fibroblast procollagen production was assessed via the determination of hydroxyproline by HPLC, as previously described (29,39). Briefly, proteins in the cell layer and medium were precipitated in ethanol and separated from free amino acids by filtration through an acid-resistant 0.45-m pore filter (type HV, Millipore).…”

“…Previous unsuccessful attempts have been made to resolve the problem associated with onchocerciasis diagnosis. Such attempts were the assessment of two or more clinical manifestations of the disease (Gemade and Utsalo, 1990;Kelly and Akogun, 1997), provision of large quantities of onchocercal antigens by cloning for serodiagnosis (Chandrashaker et al, 1991(Chandrashaker et al, , 1996, the use of polymerase chain reaction method to identify onchocercal specific complement DNA (Zimmerman et al, 1994) especially in superficial bloodless skin scrapping (Toel et al, 1998) and the monitoring of the elevated serum angiotensin (Ronday et al, 1996). However, the search for a sensitive diagnostic tool has hitherto been rendered illusive by many varying clinical manifestations of the disease in patients (Cohen and Warren, 1982).…”
