Eleven fetal echocardiographic planes using 4-dimensional ultrasound with spatio-temporal image correlation (STIC): a logical approach to fetal heart volume analysis

Abstract: BackgroundTheoretically, a cross-sectional image of any cardiac planes can be obtained from a STIC fetal heart volume dataset. We described a method to display 11 fetal echocardiographic planes from STIC volumes.MethodsFetal heart volume datasets were acquired by transverse acquisition from 200 normal fetuses at 15 to 40 weeks of gestation. Analysis of the volume datasets using the described technique to display 11 echocardiographic planes in the multiplanar display mode were performed offline.ResultsVolume da… Show more

“…operating the x, y, z controls, scaling, parallel shifting) [57] to retrieve and display all of the relevant cardiac views is difficult, time-consuming, operator dependent, and requires an in-depth knowledge about anatomy. As a result, algorithms based upon STIC have been developed over the years [15,18,21,24,28,31,33] to simplify and systematically extract information, and display cardiac planes with the objective of reducing operator dependency.…”

“…However, the optimal method to interrogate STIC volume datasets remains a challenge, and several algorithms have therefore been proposed for this purpose [15,18,21,24,28,31,33]. …”

“…Moreover, five ā€˜shortā€axis viewsā€™ have been proposed as a screening method for comprehensive fetal echocardiography. A large body of evidence now indicates that fourā€dimensional (4D) sonography with spatiotemporal image correlation (STIC) can facilitate examination of the fetal heart and may also be used to evaluate CHD. STIC technology enables acquisition of a volume dataset of the fetal heart, and displays a cine loop of a complete, single cardiac cycle in motion.…”

“…We have employed the term ā€˜adaptiveā€™ to describe a function that permits the method to fit the anatomy of each particular case under examination. Other methods are available to examine the fetal heart. Yet, they require the operator to manipulate the volume dataset and employ methodology to generate standard cardiac views.…”
