Ellipsoidal shell subtraction model of right ventricular volume. Comparison with regional free wall dimensions as indexes of right ventricular function.

Abstract: Pulse-transit sonomicrometry was used to measure the base-apex (a), anteroposterior (b), and septal-free wall (c) diameters of the left ventricle and the septal-free wall diameter of the right ventricle (d) in eight excised and three isolated, pump-perfused canine heart preparations, as well as in nine conscious dogs. In the three perfused hearts and in four of the excised hearts, right ventricular free wall regional segment lengths and segment area also were assessed. Biventricular volumes were measured direc… Show more

“…The accuracy of the invasive SSM in normal and volume-overloaded canine hearts has been verified in previous publications from our laboratory (6,7). In addition, the prism method was shown on casts to compute RV chamber volumes that closely coincide to those by water displacement.…”

“…RT3D images of the right ventricle were obtained on seven awake, large (23-30 kg) adult dogs of either sex, chronically instrumented with sonomicrometric crystals for volume measurements using the shell subtraction (SSM) model (6,7,14,22,25) both under control conditions and during subacute, surgically induced (chordal rupture) volume overload. Cardiac chamber casts were obtained in another eight dogs of comparable size and characteristics at the end of unrelated surgical experiments.…”

“…Recently, however, an ellipsoidal shell subtraction model for deter-mining RV volume by sonomicrometry was described. 5 The availability of this model permitted the investigation of RV contractile performance described in this report.…”

“…Sonomicrometry crystals (Sonometrics, London, ONT) were implanted in the LV endocardium and mid-wall of the septum to measure the minoraxis septum-to-LV free wall (D SLVFW ) and LV anteroposterior (D LVAP ) dimensions [18][19][20]. An ultrasonic flow probe (Transonic Systems, Ithaca, NY) was placed on the ascending aorta.…”
