Embryo morphokinetics derived from fresh and vitrified bovine oocytes predict blastocyst development and nuclear abnormalities

Abstract: Embryo development is a dynamic process and critical stages may go unnoticed with the use of traditional morphologic assessments, especially the timing of embryonic divisions and aberrant zygotic cleavage patterns. Bovine embryo development is impaired after oocyte vitrification, but little is known about the underlying morphokinetic behavior. Here, bovine zygotes from fresh (n = 708) and vitrified oocytes (n = 182) were monitored by time-lapse imaging and the timing and nature of early blastomere divisions we… Show more

“…Aneuploid bovine embryos have only 5.8% chance of establishing a pregnancy after their transfer, compared to 59.6% chance of euploid embryos ( Silvestri et al, 2021 ). An interesting study shows aneuploidy reflects on morphokinetics in bovine embryos, which might be used to build individual transfer decisions ( Angel-Velez et al, 2023 ).…”

“…Before fertilization, the oocyte extends its polar body forward and prepares for fertilization, whereas the sperm becomes hyperactive and ready to fertilize the oocyte [55]. Two main parameters are related to the rate of embryo cleavage: the first cleavage and the percentage of embryos that demonstrate a lag phase, which is influenced by vitrification and partial denudation [56].…”

“…The previously described microscopic techniques allow the spatial evaluation of embryos. However, embryo development is a dynamic process, and critical stages of development may go unnoticed with such traditional, one-time morphologic assessments [ 90 ]. In contrast to these one-time morphological evaluations, time-lapse monitoring (TLM) allows embryos to be evaluated temporally as well.…”
