Abstract:SummaryA patient with Kugelberg-Welander disease presented as an unexpected dificult intubation. Tracheal intubation was achieved through the laryngeal mask airway, while regurgitation was prevented with continuous cricoid pressure. Regurgitation occurred af er cricoid pressure was released.
“…Intubation problems are rarely mentioned in anesthesia textbooks, and conditions may be good . There are, however, many case reports describing difficult and failed intubations, see Table . Limited mobility of the cervical spine is caused by joint contractures and/or previous spinal surgery .…”

“…With proper settings, ventilatory support will reduce the work of breathing . The laryngeal mask airway may also be used as a rescue device in failed intubation . Other indications for the laryngeal mask airway could be tracheal stenosis or granulomas caused by repeated intubations.…”
The perioperative risks can be considerable and are mainly related to the respiratory system, from respiratory failure to difficult/impossible intubation.

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
