Emerging Applications of Bacteriocins as Antimicrobials, Anticancer Drugs, and Modulators of The Gastrointestinal Microbiota

Abstract: The use of bacteriocins holds great promise in different areas such as health, food, nutrition, veterinary, nanotechnology, among others. Many research groups worldwide continue to advance the knowledge to unravel a novel range of therapeutic agents and food preservatives. This review addresses the advances of bacteriocins and their producer organisms as biocontrol agents for applications in the medical industry and agriculture. Furthermore, the bacteriocin mechanism of action and structural characteristics wi… Show more

“…8 Thus, bacteriocins appear to be critical molecular factors influencing the proper microbiome composition of the skin, mucous membranes, and gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts. 5,9 Bacteriocins are peptides or proteins with various sizes, structures, mechanisms of action, and organization of genes. For example, bacteriocins produced by staphylococci -widespread residents and opportunistic pathogens of the skin and mucous membranes of humans and many animals -comprise four groups: 1) lantibiotics (small single-chain posttranslationally modified peptides, such as epidermin, gallidermin, or BacCH91), 2) unmodified single-chain peptides (such as aureocin A53, epidermicin NI01, and BacSp222), 3) unmodified multi-chain peptides (such as staphylococcin C55 and aureocin A70), and 4) bacteriolytic enzymes (such as lysostaphins LSs and LSp222 as well as endopeptidase ALE-1).…”

“…Huang et al (2021) highlights the potential of bacteriocins as novel therapeutic treatments in microbe infection, cancer, and immune system in human body. Cesa-Luna et al (2021) also reveal the advance usage of bacteriocin as biocontrol agent in medical and agricultural field. Along with these, they discussed about their mode of action and role of bacteriocins to modulate the signaling in host-associated microbial populations.…”

“…In comparison to antibiotics, their mode of action rarely induces resistance. Further, different bacteriocins exist with either narrow or broad-spectrum killing capacities, making them attractive for biotechnological use (reviewed in [ 190 ]). More research on their mode of action as well as the spectrum of activity is needed in order to use them efficiently as microbiota-modulating drugs.…”
