Emerging Data on the Safety and Efficacy of Transurethral Water Vapour Therapy for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Abstract: Benign prostate disease is a disease of prevalence and over 25% of men affected by bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) as a result of it will require surgical intervention during their lifetime. While transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) has served as the cornerstone treatment for many years, there now exist a multitude of minimally invasive alternatives including the Rezum system. The latter is a novel form of transurethral water vapour therapy, which is attracting increasing attention. I… Show more

“…Another caution when using reintervention following water vapour therapy in patients with prior Urolift is the theoretical possibility of loosening of the preplaced clips as the prostatic tissue undergoes apoptosis and resorption after vapour therapy (Jones et al, 2021). In our 3 month follow up we did not encounter complication due to the clips subsequent migration.…”

“…Hence, extra care must be maintained to ensure that vapour injections are placed only as per the original description to prevent any sphincter damage and subsequent incontinence (McVary et al, 2016). “…In addition, the procedure has a lower incidence of sexual side effects compared with other treatments. Preservation of sexual function is a major concern for many patients, and Rezum therapy has been shown to have a lower incidence of sexual side effects compared with HoLEP, TURP, greenlight, and other surgical interventions [11] .…”

“…Therefore, there is urgent need innovative treatment options, especially non-invasive or minimal invasive, effective, safe, and economical theapies. Radiofrequency (RF) therapy and treatment have these characteristics with many fields of application in surgery and medicine ( 13 , 14 ). It has been applied to a variety of diseases as an economical, efficient and minimally invasive treatment option with high compliance ( 15 ).…”
