Emerging Molecular Links Between Plant Photomorphogenesis and Virus Resistance

Abstract: Photomorphogenesis refers to photoreceptor-mediated morphological changes in plant development that are triggered by light. Multiple photoreceptors and transcription factors (TFs) are involved in the molecular regulation of photomorphogenesis. Likewise, light can also modulate the outcome of plant–virus interactions since both photosynthesis and many viral infection events occur in the chloroplast. Despite the apparent association between photosynthesis and virus infection, little is known about whether there … Show more

“…In WM-7, the GO category “photosynthesis” was the most represented of the upregulated genes at 6 and 12 dpi. In plant–virus interactions, the chloroplast is strategically manipulated and damaged by viruses, affecting large proportions of genes ( Bhattacharyya and Chakraborty, 2018 ; Rossitto de Marchi et al, 2020 ; Zhai et al, 2020 ).…”

“…Since many plant virus infection events occur in the chloroplast [ 35 ] and are regulated by host photosynthetic and photomorphogenic activities [ 36 ], it is not surprising that NSs interacts with multiple chloroplast-localized proteins. Chloroplast-localized carbonic anhydrases appeared twice in our refined N. benthamiana NSs interactor list ( Table 1 ).…”

“…Plants having a mutation in phyA and phyB also show impaired expression of SA induced PR genes [ 171 ]. The impact of light exposure and photoreceptors on plant defense and photomorphogenesis has already been reviewed in previous studies [ 172 ], however, understanding the detailed molecular mechanism needs further research. Thus, PHOTs are not only involved in plant growth and development but also help plants to survive and grow in diverse environments including biotic stress.…”
