Empathic Interactions in Automated Vehicles #EmpathicCHI

Abstract: Automation in driving will change the role of the drivers from actor to passive supervisor. Although the vehicle will be responsible for driving manoeuvres, drivers will need to rely on automation and understand its decisions to establish a trusting relationship between them and the vehicle. Progress has been made in conversational agents and afective machines recently. Moreover, it seems to be promising in this establishment of trust between humans and machines. We believe it is essential to investigate the u… Show more

“…The metaverse offers solutions that overcome the limitations of low ecological validity presented by the scenarios displayed on computer screens. It allows individuals to perceive themselves within simulated environments, facilitating experiences similar to those in reality [ 70 , 71 , 72 , 73 , 74 , 75 ].…”

“…We believe that this combination of advances in technology, renewed interest in the relationship between technology and emotion, and variation in approaches to emotion, warrant discussion at CHI. There have already been CHI workshops on particular aspects of emotion [6,8,10,37], CHI symposia on Computing and Mental Health [42], and emotion workshops at related conferences [29,40]. However, there have been few HCI workshops that discussed emotion more broadly.…”

“…Also, the time spent in the autonomous car could be used to improve the driver's condition and/or emotions. This biofeedback could be conveyed in different ways, modalities and locations in the car, such as an icon or a message displayed on the vehicle's dashboard or user's personal device [3], vibrations in the seat [2], multimodal agent [5,9], ambient lights to reduce driver's stress [6,20], or even psychological-based interventions [13].…”
