Emphysematous cystitis successfully treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy: case report

Abstract: Emphysematous cystitis is an uncommon acute infection of the underlying bladder musculature and mucosa, caused by gas-producing organisms. Here we describe an 87-year-old woman with diabetes mellitus and emphysematous cystitis who was successfully treated with hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy. Her predisposition of diabetes and infection with gas-producing bacteria was considered to precede the development of emphysematous cystitis. Computed tomography revealed gas accumulation in the bladder wall and lumen. A… Show more

“…However, its typical manifestation is that of gas production during urination. 9 EC is typically intractable and persistent, with a long treatment time and a high recurrence rate. 10 It’s treatment can be made more difficult by a series of associated complications, leading to an entire urinary tract infection, renal dysfunction and the development of sepsis.…”

“…Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO 2 ) is a UHMS-approved treatment for radiation cystitis [1]. In addition to radiation cystitis, the use HBO 2 has been reported in the treatment of other causes of cystitis including cyclophosphamide-induced hemorrhagic cystitis [2,3], BK virus-associated hemorrhagic cystitis [4,5], interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome [6][7][8], emphysematous cystitis [9,10], and hemorrhagic cystitis following bone marrow transplantation [11]. The premise is that HBO 2 stimulates mucosal repair in the urinary bladder.…”
