The current study was a survey into the issue of project leadership influence on project management and performance. It has objectively focused on effects of leadership skills, experience, quality and styles in enhancing project performance. Further, the study sought to answer questions on the impact of aligning, motivating, directing and influencing in enhancing project performance. Apart from conducting a review of past studies, theoretical foundations were also reviewed to underpin the hypotheses that guided the study. Quantitative data was collected using structured questionnaires and analysed descriptively. Further, regression analyses were done and results confirmed a positive and strong connection concerning leadership components and management functions on project performance. From obtained outcomes, recommendations are given for future studies to focus on, as well as for improvement in different industries while implementing various projects.

Leadership and organizational culture are linked to project performance. The culture of the organization exerts an influence on the leader and shapes the actions and competencies of the leader with the passage of time. For last few decades, project management has extensively been involved in management of projects but still projects are not guaranteed to be successful in various organizational environments. There are certain factors affecting management of projects in different situations where the competence of project leadership is one of the key factors. This chapter employed different keywords and methods for selection of articles synthesizing findings and research gaps of earlier studies. This chapter offers certain limitations and future directions for researchers. The outcomes of this chapter are expected to advance the body of knowledge and help the practitioners in the field of leadership and project management.

The paper discusses leadership characteristics in international projects that require cooperation. The influence of the leader's traits and qualities on the implementation of the multilateral project was studied under the framework of the Latvia-Lithuania-Belarus TransBorder Cooperation Program. A multistage survey in different target groups was used for the research. The research revealed that there is no discrepancy between the effective leadership at multilaterals and effective leadership concepts in general. Nevertheless, some specific leader's characteristics and qualities can be underlined. Multilateral projects require leader to be competitive, self-confident, visionary and supportive at first. Herewith, the leader must have good knowledge on the project technical requirements, an ability to consult project team on performance, a capability to coordinate and to control project processes, a capacity to effectively manage project documentation, a competence of mentoring and employee engagement, an ability to meet project team needs, and perfect skills of project internal and external communication. The research also revealed that cultural differences of team members can determine the attitude towards leadership. JEL classification:L14; L38; M12.
