Emulgel: A Boon for Enhanced Topical Drug Delivery

Abstract: Background: Topical drug delivery system is dosage forms which are applied directly to the skin to cure various diseases. When we compare all the semisolid preparation for topical drug delivery, gels have been extensively used in cosmetics as well as pharmaceutical preparations. The major drawback of gels is in delivery of hydrophobic drugs which can be overcome by using emulgels. The dosage forms where gel and emulsion are combined together are known as emulgel. Emulgel is one of the modern technologies in no… Show more

“…The drug candidate suitable to formulate as an emulgel should possess' high pKa value, Half-life (t 1/2 ) of less than 10 h, less molecular size, the molecular mass of 500 daltons or less, partition coefficient (logP) value of 0.8 to 5 and less polarity. In addition, the drug candidate should be non-irritating with a skin permeability coefficient of equal to or more than 0.5×10 -3 cm/h [3] .…”

“…The vehicle used for the preparation of emulgel should possess properties like efficient deposition of the medication with even distribution on the skin; deliver and release the drug at the site of operation; sustaining a level of therapeutics in the target tissue for a sufficient period. Furthermore, it should be compatible with the skin of the patient [3] .…”

“…Emulgels have the ability to deliver hydrophilic and lipophilic drugs. These semi-solid systems not only have the advantages of emulsions and gels but are also stable [ 7 , 8 ]. O/W emulgels or O/W emulsion hydrogels can deliver lipid-soluble compounds and have good physical stability and mechanical properties as gels [ 9 , 10 ].…”
