Endocrine problems in adolescents with chronic illness and disabilities

Abstract

Endocrine problems are commonly seen in adolescents with chronic illness and disabilities. These problems may be due to the interference of normal endocrine function, either by the underlying pathology itself or because of the treatment modalities used. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that a high index of suspicion for the development of these deficits be maintained in such patients. Growth and development should be very closely monitored for assuring early diagnosis and for the early initiation of adequate therapeutic measures to minimize further morbidity and mortality.
