Endogenous longevity and the joint dynamics of pollution and capital accumulation

Abstract: The current paper offers a new explanation of the emergence of multiple equilibria, for which the high (low) income equilibrium is associated with high (low) environmental quality. This new explanation rests on endogenous technological choice in the presence of emission taxes -an idea whose foundations find strong support from existing empirical evidence. Thus, the interactions between environmental policy and technology choice, within a framework that accounts for the health effects of pollution, may suggest … Show more

“…As we noted earlier, the presence of varying longevity is crucial for the interactions between saving and fertility choices. Following others (Varvarigos, 2010;Palivos and Varvarigos, forthcoming) we assume that a household's lifetime is endogenous. Particularly, we assume that w t is given by 48 Dimitrios Varvarigos and Intan Zanariah Zakaria…”

“…Other theoretical analyses have incorporated environmental quality in models of growth and (endogenous) life expectancy but have neglected the issue of fertility choices (e.g. Pautrel, 2009;Varvarigos, 2010). A strand of literature that examines the interactions between pollution and optimal fertility choices, employs models where mortality and life expectancy are LONGEVITY, FERTILITY AND ECONOMIC GROWTH 45 exogenous (Lehmijoki and Palokangas, 2010;Bretschger, 2013;Constant et al, 2014).…”

“…Under different settings, Mariani et al . () and Varvarigos () show that multiple, path‐dependent equilibria in which the high income equilibrium is associated with improved environmental conditions are possible when environmental quality is an important determinant of higher life expectancy. In a separate analysis, Varvarigos () derives conditions under which (environment‐related) structural parameters can determine the emergence of endogenous thresholds and poverty traps in the process of economic development.…”

“…Using a model that accounts for two conflicting health externalities from pollution, Jouvet et al (2010) show that taxes on both income and private health expenditures are necessary to decentralize the social optimum. Mariani et al (2010) show that when environmental quality leads to higher life expectancy, the economy may admit multiple, path-dependent equilibria, whereas Varvarigos (2014) shows that such multiplicity also requires the combination of emission taxes with the endogenous choice of environmental technology by producers. Finally, in Pautrel (2008), the natural environment has an amenity value in addition to its beneficial effect on longevity.…”
