Endogenous superoxide dismutase activation by oral administration of riboflavin reduces abdominal aortic aneurysm formation in rats

Abstract: Riboflavin treatment prevents AAA formation in a rat model through an antioxidant effect and might be a potent pharmacologic agent for AAA treatment in clinical practice.

“…Therefore, RF‐induced reduction in neutrophil recruitment into the colon may also be related to the attenuation of oxidative stress. Additionally, RF has been shown to protect tissues from oxidative damage, most probably through its ability to scavenge free radicals . Using the luminol‐ and lucigenin‐enhanced CL method, which is a simple and a reproducible technique, allowed us to quantitate the ROS generation in the present study.…”

“…A possible explanation for this finding that RF treatment along with AA application may not have enough time to replenish the GSH stores in this model. RF was also shown to be an effective agent to boost the activity of SOD, which is another critical component of antioxidant defense systems against free radical damage …”

“…It has been shown that riboflavin therapy can elevate cardiomyocytes SOD activity in diabetic cardiomyopathy state (33). Also, in a 2016 published study, Yu et al has stated that riboflavin therapy can prevent abdominal aortic aneurysm through the endogenous activation of SOD in aneurysm walls, decreasing ROS levels (37). In another study, SOD and catalase activities have been significantly reduced by riboflavin-deficient diet for 12 weeks in fish (33).…”
