In recent years, digital endoscopy has established as key technology for medical screenings and minimally invasive surgery. Since then, various research communities with manifold backgrounds have picked up on the idea of processing and automatically analyzing the inherently available video signal that is produced by the endoscopic camera. Proposed works mainly include image processing techniques, pattern recognition, machine learning methods and Computer Vision algorithms. While most contributions deal with realtime assistance at procedure time, the post-procedural processing of recorded videos is still in its infancy. Many post-processing problems are based on typical Multimedia methods like indexing, retrieval, summarization and video interaction, but have only been sparsely addressed so far for this domain. The goals of this survey are (1) to introduce this research field to a broader audience in the Multimedia community to stimulate further research, (2) to describe domain-specific characteristics of endoscopic videos that need to be addressed in a pre-processing step, and (3) to systematically bring together the very diverse research results for the first time to provide a broader overview of related research that is currently not perceived as belonging together.

Abstract. In this paper we propose an architecture for processing endoscopic procedures results. The goal is to create a complete system capable of processing any type of endoscopic multimedia results, in order to overcome the most common issues in the endoscopic domain (e.g. video's long-duration, gastroenterologist's possible difficulty to maintain the focus and efficiency during the viewing process, imperfections in images/videos). It was this scenario that led to the conception of the MIVprocessing solution, which will address these and other problems, providing an added value to the elaboration of diagnoses. The MIVprocessing is composed of five tasks: Video Summarization (elimination of the "non-informative" frames); Pre-Processing (correction/improvement of the frames); Pre-Detection; Segmentation; and Feature Extraction and Classification. The idea is to create a framework that brings together the capabilities of different but at the same time complementary concepts (e.g. image and signal processing, machine learning, computer vision). This conjugation applied to the endoscopic domain provides a set of features capable of improving the gastroenterologist's activities during and after the procedure.

The technological evolution seen in the past years led to an increase in the number therapeutic and diagnostic tests. In this paper a new solution for storage, diffusion, and real-time remote assistance in endoscopic exams is presented. The aim is to solve the problem of endoscopic examinations not being archived and easily accessed anywhere within a health care network by authorized health care professionals and researchers. Solving that problem avoids unneeded repetition of unpleasant exams and allows the comparison of video segments with future procedures. The presented solution also allows the streaming and real-time remote assistance of exams being carried out. This way health care professionals can contribute with their expertise even if they cannot attend onsite.
