Vascular anomalies are congenital errors in vascular development. They frequently involve the head, neck, and oral cavity. Subdivided into vascular tumors (hemangiomas) and vascular malformations, vascular anomalies remain poorly understood. However, growing interest and recent advances in the diagnosis, management, and molecular characterization of these lesions are improving treatment strategies. The role of the multidisciplinary team cannot be overstated. This review provides both basic and up-to-date knowledge on the most common vascular anomalies encountered by physicians and practitioners. Because treatment options for vascular anomalies are widely variable and often debated, this report aims to provide a comprehensive approach to these lesions based upon current concepts and practical clinical experience.

Summary: Management of venous malformation (VM) in the pharynx is challenging because of difficulties in needle access and the presence of nerves as well as other critical anatomical structures around the lesion. We describe the successful treatment of a large pharyngeal VM using transoral sclerotherapy. The patient, a 21-yearold male, visited our hospital for sclerotherapy treatment consultation after complaining of difficulty in swallowing because of a pharyngeal VM. Transoral sclerotherapy was successful, and the symptoms showed complete alleviation. Using a flat detector-equipped angiographic C-arm CT (CACT) enabled the precise assessment of sclerosant placement, facilitating safer sclerotherapy in the pharynx.

Five adult laryngeal venous malformation cases treated effectively with sclerotherapy

Laryngeal venous malformation is a comparatively rare condition in adults. It presents as a livid or bluish mass that may cause bleeding, hoarseness, stridor, and even difficulty in breathing. So far, treatment has largely consisted of laser therapy and surgical removal. Five cases of adult laryngeal venous malformations that were treated by sclerotherapy (local injection of monoethanolamine oleate solution) are reported. All lesions disappeared after one or two treatment sessions, and two of the five cases that presented recently were cured in the outpatient clinic setting with no sequelae. Sclerotherapy with monoethanolamine oleate is a safe, easy, and effective treatment for laryngeal venous malformations.
