Endoscopic optical coherence tomography angiography using a forward imaging piezo scanner probe

Abstract: A forward imaging endoscope for optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) featuring a piezoelectric fiber scanner is presented. Imaging is performed with an optical coherence tomography (OCT) system incorporating an akinetic light source with a center wavelength of 1300 nm, bandwidth of 90 nm and A‐line rate of 173 kHz. The endoscope operates in contact mode to avoid motion artifacts, in particular, beneficial for OCTA measurements, and achieves a transversal resolution of 12 μm in air at a rigid probe s… Show more

“…The detailed description of the system incorporating the endoscopic probe can be found elsewhere. 61 For OCT imaging, a piezoelectric tube-based forward viewing endoscope with a diameter of 3 mm and a rigid length of 15.6 mm was used. The optical components were arranged in a Fourier-plane configuration to allow telecentric scanning across the tissue plane.…”

“…Endoscopic probes incorporating OCT have been applied for in-vivo applications in many medical fields for instance in esophagus [ 43 , 44 ], colon [ 45 , 46 ] or intravascular applications [ 47 , 48 ], proofing the translation of OCT into miniaturized imaging devices. In addition, endoscopic angiography has been demonstrated recently, providing possible additional contrast for the pituitary gland and adenoma differentiation [ 49 ]. Using 800 nm for in-vivo endoscopic application would lead to significant light absorption, due to the hemoglobin characteristics and high number of scattering red blood cells during surgery [ 50 , 51 ].…”

“…Hence most OCT scanning systems utilize the NIR to the infrared region of the optical spectrum. Wavelengths of 1300 nm [19], [20], and 1320 nm [21] are used in the SS-OCT scanning system. Different types of low coherence light sources may be used.…”
