Endoscopic Photography

Abstract: We introduce a simple, inexpensive, and easily available endoscopic digital photography system. Digital photography offers numerous advantages over analog photography in a clinical practice. Digital imaging and archiving is more durable and easier to incorporate into patient records and clinical presentations. As the demand for high-quality digital imaging increases, easy-to-use inexpensive digital endoscopic photography will soon replace 35-mm camera technology.

“…Examination of the ears, nose, and throat using medical grade endoscopes through a small hole in a mask or a mask with an endoscopy valve may lessen aerosolization during routine ENT examination 15 but this still requires the examiner to be in close contact with the patient (less than 1 meter). OnVEx has the advantage of a no-touch setup and physical distancing of 1 meter separated by a physical barrier which could theoretically allow for use of level I PPE.…”

“…However, the equipment for accomplishing such a task can be quite expensive. In addition, commonly available VHS recorders are analog devices that limit editing and incorporation into other digital formats without additional equipment 1. New digital cameras and digital video recorders afford the otolaryngologist a varied means to perform video documentation (digital or analog).…”

“…The required equipment is: (1) a digital camera with audio/visual (AV) output capability and associated cables; (2) an endoscopic coupler; (3) a light source; (4) a TV and/or VHS recorder, depending on need; and (5) a flexible nasopharyngoscope or rigid nasal endoscope. The necessary equipment for digital endoscopy has previously been reported 1. Assuming any busy practice would already have appropriate scopes and light sources, the cost of this would range from $1000 to $1200.…”
