Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection for Gastric Epithelial Tumors: A Multicenter Study in Taiwan

“…11,12 However, our overall perforation rate was lower than that in previous studies, 11,12,15,18,[20][21][22] because we included absolute indication and EMR cases. Procedure time was longer for tumors with submucosal fibrosis (P Ͻ .001), for larger tumors (P Ͻ .001), and for the ESD procedure (P ϭ .005); all of these factors were predominant in the extended indication group.…”

“…Although they are not very popular in Western countries due to many concerns and limited expertise [2], EMR and ESD have become standard therapies for early gastric cancer in Japan [3], South Korea [4] and China [5]. However, a large artificial gastric ulcer induced by endoscopic therapies causes many complications including pain, bleeding and perforation [6].…”

“…The adoption of ESD outside Japan and Korea has been slow. 5,8,[15][16][17][18] The reported studies were mostly small series and the results were variable. In four European and two South-East Asian studies, the number of patients included was between 23 and 70, the en-bloc resection rate ranged from 25% to 100% and morbidity 0% to 24%.…”
