Energetic performance index improvement after Glenn and Damus-Kaye-Stansel procedure using vector flow mapping analysis: a case report

Abstract: Background: Echocardiography vector flow mapping can assess dynamic flow to treat congenital heart diseases. We evaluated intracardiac flow, energy loss, left ventricular output kinetic energy, and energetic performance index using vector flow mapping during Glenn and Damus-Kaye-Stansel procedures in order to assess the efficacy of the surgery. Case presentation: A 9-month-old boy underwent Glenn and Damus-Kaye-Stansel procedures. The energy loss depends on the left ventricular preload; therefore, energy loss … Show more

“…Normal pattern vortex and EL reference value of the left ventricle in adults and pediatric patients were confirmed by using VFM ( 5 , 6 ). VFM analysis of valvular ( 7 10 ) and congenital heart disease ( 11 , 12 ) can reportedly reveal and evaluate the effectiveness of the surgical treatment. As it does not require the use of contrast, this VFM technology can be easily used in routine clinical practice to assess ventricular vortices and predict patients' outcome ( 13 ).…”

“…57 In addition, EL seems to be a valid parameter to assess diastolic function in children after arterial switch operation. 58 Lastly, some authors examined flow parameters in patients with double-outlet right ventricle 59 double inlet-left ventricle 60 and tricuspid atresia 61 suggesting the suitability of VFM technique even in complex patients; however, these are anecdotical cases.…”

“…Several studies attempted to elucidate the mechanism of thrombus formation in the left ventricle 7,8 . VFM analysis of valvular [9][10][11][12] and congenital heart disease [13][14][15] can reportedly reveal and evaluate the effectiveness of the surgical treatment. As it does not require the use of contrast, this VFM technology can be easily used in routine clinical practice to assess ventricular vortices and predict patients' outcome 16 .…”
