Energy efficiency and Jevons' paradox in OECD countries: policy implications leading toward sustainable development

Abstract: Energy consumption is defined as one of the main determinants of environmental degradation. Therefore, this issue becomes one of the main points of debate to achieve sustainable development. This research examines how a set of economic factors determine the energy consumption in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development countries, for which second-generation econometric methods have been used that control cross-sectional dependence issues. Therefore, the results, using nonlinear methods, suggest th… Show more

“…However, as shown in columns ( 8) and ( 9), the estimated coefficients of foreign direct investment (FDI) are not significant, which illustrates that the green development effect of attracting foreign investment does not support that, and although hosting sports events can attract foreign investment, it does not achieve the green and low-carbon development. After reviewing the literature (Baron and Kenny, 1986;Hille et al, 2019;Pan et al, 2020;Yu et al, 2022b), we concluded that a possible explanation is that there are both inhibitory and promotional effects of FDI on the environment in China. The inhibitory effect is mostly realized through the investment scale of FDI, while the promotional effect is realized by technological upgrading.…”

“…Particularly in the context of the prevalence of COVID-19, according to the report of the World Bank, blockade and other measures taken by countries will affect the pace of progress toward the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 7), including renewable energy and energy efficiency. However, these human activities may lead to energy consumption and severely affect the ecosystem (Yu et al, 2022b;Ke et al, 2022), thus hindering sustainable economic development (Huo et al, 2022). So, the current environmental problems have become an urgent and important topic.…”

“…An interesting approach is the one which analyses the correlation between crude oil imports, renewable energy, transport services, trade, industrial value-added, and patents (Yu et al 2022a , b ). The analysis covers the German economy from 1990 to 2020.…”

“…The environmental pollution has become an essential threat to the global environment (Jt et al, 2022). Energy consumption is defined as one of the main determinants of environmental degradation (Yu et al, 2022b). Cities play an important role in China's low carbon development, as urban and industrial development consumes large amounts of energy (Liu Y. et al, 2022).…”
