Energy efficiency and the misuse of programmable thermostats: The effectiveness of crowdsourcing for understanding household behavior

Abstract: Programmable thermostats are generally sold as energy-saving devices controlling heating and cooling systems, but can lead to energy waste when not operated as designed by the manufacturers. We utilized Amazon Mechanical Turk, an online crowdsourcing service, to investigate thermostat settings and behavior in households. We posted a survey and paid respondents to upload pictures of their thermostats to verify self-reported data. About 40% of programmable thermostat owners did not use programming features and 3… Show more

“…The poor sensor quality also provides a less stable of value reading to the thermostat so the contactor also works inaccurately. In addition, the conventional of the thermostat causes the mechanical contactor to be more easily damaged, lead to energy waste and affect the production [8].…”

“…A clear link exists between the underperformance of technically advanced homes and the unforeseen use of services controls (Pritoni et al, 2015). A review of a UK national building performance evaluation (BPE) programme covering over 100 projects noted: 'There is a tendency to make controls for mechanical and electrical services too complicated.…”
