This thesis presents design and operation of a newly developed virtual thermostat to control any desired local temperature in an HVAC controlled space. Conventional HVAC thermostats use a single point temperature sensor at one fixed location in a controlled space to control the temperature of the whole space. The single point temperature sensor does not represent the entire controlled domain. In addition, in most applications only a small zone in the controlled space needs to be controlled (for example where the people are located). Heating and cooling of the unnecessary zones lead to extra energy consumption that can be saved if only the required zones are controlled. Such a control system requires knowledge of the temperature distribution in the whole zone at all times. In this work, we have used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to determine the distributive temperature inside the controlled space at all times and turn the HVAC system ON and OFF based on the temperature of the desired zone in the space. In this study, we have determined the energy savings by comparing the energy consumption of a conventional thermostat controlled system with a locally controlled one. Several cases with different heat losses, and different inlet air velocities and directions are studied. Energy savings of up to 22% is realized for the cases studied here. In addition, the study showed the effect of person's location on the energy saving using the local control. One of the main problems with such a control system is that the CFD calculations may take a long time (10-24 hours depending on the complexity of the iii problem), which is not practical for real-time temperature control. In order to reduce the computational times and simulate various operating conditions quickly, an artificial neural network (ANN) model is used to train the temperature control system. This resulted in reduction of the computational times to few seconds, making this system practical. This research develops roaster control system using Arduino as central to processing data that provides a reference for machine operations. Development of this system as an alternative to use of thermostat as a conventional contactor at roaster that is less detailed, easily damaged, less sensitive and effect to productivity. The research was conducted by the design and implementation method that is by choosing and connecting the appropriate sensor components to Arduino, making algorithm protocol, making programming, doing the installation to roaster machine and test the system. This system works when the thermocouple read and transmits temperature data for processed and used as a reference to execute the machine. Arduino as the central processing for all data input and output. Testing carried out on small-sized roaster after being modified using Arduino control systems. The test results show that under conditions of no load, the control system requires 38 minutes operate until the temperature reaches 450ᵒ Celsius, whereas when given HS coffee, the system requires ± 1-hour with 10-minutes delay until the color of coffee is black and ready for the milling process. Control system of roaster machine with Arduino produces the better black color of coffee, more fragrant and better quality.

Domestic buildings are increasingly complex; saturated with services that need coherent control if design and inhabitants' goals are to be achieved. The evidenced inappropriate use of controls linked with performance gap suggests that effective methods for assessing the inhabitant relationship with control interfaces for services are needed within building performance evaluation and practice studies. The development of a bespoke domestic usability tool over two iterations is presented, demonstrating new insights into the relationship between design and inhabitant engagement with controls. Deep contextual development came from trialling the tool in four UK domestic case studies. Understanding the purpose of a control interface and inhabitant role was found to be a fundamental diagnostic for inhabitant engagement. The tool became a prompt for immediate action or further information seeking for a quarter of households involved in its application. However affordances and physical issues identified could not be addressed without major physical changes, which should have been picked up at the design and construction stage. Organisational learning based on the tool findings was triggered in one of four developers involved. The challenges for developing usability studies are discussed with recommendations provided for different actors in the housing and construction industry on how to progress these.
