Energy management in Wireless Sensor Networks: A survey

Abstract: International audienceEnergy management in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is of paramount importance for the remotely deployed energy stringent sensor nodes. These nodes are typically powered by attached batteries. Several battery-driven energy conservation schemes are proposed to ensure energy efficient network operation. The constraints associated to the limited battery capacity shifted the research trend towards finding alternate sources by harvesting ambient energy. This survey presents a high level taxon… Show more

“…It can connect up to seven devices, overcoming problems that older technologies had when attempting to connect to each other. [8] Bluetooth operates at frequencies between 2402 and 2480 MHz, or 2400 and 2483.5 MHz including guard bands 2 MHz wide at the bottom end and 3.5 MHz wide at the top. This is in the globally unlicensed (but not unregulated) Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) 2.4 GHz short-range radio frequency band.…”

“…Nowadays, that technology related to electronics systems is developing rapidly -this trend could be observed by looking into the direction of mobile devices development, where every few months there is improvement in data processing (clock speed and number of processing cores [14]), data transfer (speed and power efficiency of wireless communication [1][2] [6]) and energy consumption [8].…”

“…Each node is designed to handle its energy supply in order to maximize the total lifetime of the network [1]. Besides, a sensor can exhaust its energy completely and become nonoperational because of the expiry of its battery [2].…”

“…A sensor node, despite its limited energy, processing capability and memory, collaborates with other sensor nodes, queries the physical environment, compiles the received data and transmits them to the BS. With their capabilities for monitoring and control, the network can provide a fine global picture of the target area through the integration of the data collected from many sensors each providing a coarse local view [6,7].…”
