Energy Optimization For Hybrid ARQ With Turbo Coding: Rate Adaptation and Allocation

Abstract: We consider incremental redundancy (IR) hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) over independent block-fading channels with turbo coding. We consider different cases of channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter: the transmitter has no knowledge of any CSI, or knows the CSI in previous transmission rounds through a perfect feedback channel, or knows both current and previous CSI. The transmitter decides the forward error correction code rate based on the CSI it has. We minimize the energy consumption of… Show more

“…• Feedback implementation: The issue of imperfect/outdated channel state information (CSI) feedback is critical in the implementation of link-layer retransmission protocols with PHY adaptation schemes (e.g., rate/power adaptation) in RF systems [51]. Nevertheless, the CSI feedback is relatively easy to implement in FSO systems.…”

“…The advantage of using HIHO can be also improved when using advanced schemes as described in [19], [22]. Examples for research that considered particular FEC and HARQ are: 1) Turbo codes: [43]- [50] 2) TPCs: [42], [51]- [56] 3) LDPC codes: [57]- [70] 4) Polar codes: [71]- [78] Other codes such as Reed-Solomon, convolutional and Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) codes have been considered for HARQ, however, such codes have been replaced by the aforementioned more powerful codes.…”
