Energy use, cost and CO2 emissions of electric cars

Abstract: We examine efficiency, costs and greenhouse gas emissions of current and future electric cars (EV), including the impact from charging EV on electricity demand and infrastructure for generation and distribution. Uncoordinated charging would increase national peak load by 7% at 30% penetration rate of EV and household peak load by 54%, which may exceed the capacity of existing electricity distribution infrastructure. At 30% penetration of EV, off-peak charging would result in a 20% higher, more stable base load… Show more

“…This is due to the much higher efficiency of the electric motor. Indeed, the so-called "tank-to-wheel" efficiency (engine/motor efficiency) of electric vehicles is much higher than for combustion engines [27,33].…”

“…3, in our vehicle model, there are bidirectional energy flows between the vehicle socket and wheels through the AC/DC converter, battery, DC/AC converter, motor/generator and transmission. EV socket-to-wheels efficiency is taken as 69%, based on the average values of EV components found in reviewed literature (Smith 2010a;Campanari et al 2009;Hayes et al 2011;Van Sterkenburg et al 2011;van Vliet et al 2011).…”

“…One of the main reasons is probably ecology, since as can be seen from table 1 natural gas is the fuel that emits minimum toxic compounds in comparison with other fuels. These studies focused mainly on liquid propane, propane-butane mixture (LPG), compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied (LNG) and compressed hydrogen and liquefied [5,14].…”
