The 21st century has seen shifts in social and scientific understandings of gender and sexuality in the United States. From the legitimization of same-sex marriage to the heightened visibility of transgender identities, nonbinary gender, and forms of intimate diversity such as asexuality, kink, and polyamory, core cultural and scientific assumptions about gender and sexuality have been challenged. This article situates these changes in the historical context of 21st century social technologies, which challenge traditional sources of authority about information and provide enhanced opportunities for individuals to experience authenticity in gender and sexuality. We frame authenticity as a master cultural narrative in the United States characterized by feeling a heightened sense of self-authorship and alignment between inner experience and embodiment of gender and sexuality. Five narratives now circulate in the United States, four of which support sexual and gender diversity: (a) gender as self-constructed; (b) sexuality as plural, playful, flexible, and fluid; (c) sexuality and monogamy as cultural compulsions; and (d) intersectionality as central to the experience of sexuality and gender. A fifth narrative seeking to legitimize hierarchies (e.g., patriarchy) is hostile to sexual and gender diversity but remains anchored in a metanarrative of authenticity and has benefitted equally from the affordances of social technologies. This historical moment provides researchers and practitioners with the opportunity to more intentionally ground their work in lived experience, challenge normative thinking about sexuality and gender, practice affirmation, center the phenomenon of diversity over discrete identity categories in an ever-exclusionary acronym (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, and more identities [LGBTQ+]), and embrace fluid and nonlinear narratives of social change.

The rapid evolution of societal and cultural dynamics in the contemporary era presents both significant challenges and remarkable opportunities for the guidance of youth ideology and the promotion of mental health among young people. The pervasive influence of technology, especially social media, has transformed the way youth interact with the world and each other, impacting their ideological development and psychological well-being. This article examines the multifaceted challenges faced by today's youth, including the pressure of social media, the conflict between traditional values and modern norms, and the increased prevalence of mental health issues. Concurrently, it explores the opportunities that arise from these challenges—opportunities for leveraging technology for mental health support, the role of progressive education in shaping ideology, and the potential for family and community support structures to provide a nurturing environment. Through a review of diverse case studies, from the Finnish education system to digital platforms for mental health, this article provides insights into successful strategies and programs that address the complex needs of contemporary youth. These examples highlight the importance of a comprehensive and adaptive approach, emphasizing the need for collaboration across various sectors to foster a generation that is not only ideologically sound but also mentally resilient.

The community concept underwent a series of adaptations and integrations throughout the decades. One of these transitions was supported by the rise of virtual communities, especially social network sites (SNSs). These platforms are recognized to serve as spaces for marginalized groups like transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals to create safe and inclusive communities for self‐expression and activism. To investigate how TGD activists engage with SNS, 21 activists were interviewed, exploring challenges, potentials and perceptions. Reflexive thematic analysis revealed that participants perceive SNS in line with the community experience framework, viewing them as resources for accessing information, providing support and fostering belonging and investment, and as acts of responsibility aimed at nurturing reciprocity, sense of duty and social justice advocacy. However, SNS also proved to expose activists to vulnerability within the TGD community itself, where a hierarchy that marginalizes TGD identities with transnormative experiences is often reproduced. Additionally, SNS anonymity offers a safer environment for TGD individuals to come out but protects hate speech perpetrators. Thus, while pivotal in TGD activism and community building, the dual nature of SNS underscores the complexities of virtual spaces. Finally, the study calls for redefining the concept of community beyond the virtual–physical dichotomy.
