To improve interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber (CF) and epoxy resin, a low‐cost and environment‐friendly method was developed to treat the CF surface via the bio‐inspired co‐deposition of catechol (Cc) and polyethyleneimine (PEI). It is noteworthy that the deposition process reacts at room temperature with water as solvent, and does not require harsh conditions or the use of toxic reagents. After treatment, the CF/epoxy composites were endowed with excellent mechanical properties and showed increases of 51.9% and 51.7% for flexural strength and ILSS, respectively, in comparison with unsized CF laminates. The analyses of fractured surface morphologies and strengthening mechanism of the composites indicated that the uniformly coated Cc‐PEI on the fiber surface can promote the diffusion and entanglement of the matrix molecular chains and form chemical bonding as well as π‐π stacking, thus effectively improving the interfacial adhesion. In addition, the facile process disclosed in this study can provide a new strategy to not only for CF treating but also expected to be used in the modification of other high performance fiber reinforcement and industrial applications.

The authors prepared crosslinkable toughened polypropylene to be used for simultaneous spinning of hybrid yarn and the preparation of continuous glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene composites by filament winding to be consolidated by compression molding. A subsequent electron treatment aims on crosslinking of matrix as well as enhancement of interfacial adhesion in the interphase of glass fiberreinforced polypropylene composites. The authors evaluate the crosslinking behavior as well as the tensile properties of crosslinkable toughened polypropylene. Finally, the authors use transverse tensile test and single fiber pull-out test in order to study the effect of matrix modification and electron treatment on continuous glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene composites as well as on single glass fiber polypropylene model microcomposites.

This is a review on the structure and performance characteristics of carbon fiber and carbon fiber composite material (CFCM) and their application research progress. Carbon content varies with the type of carbon fiber, and the carbon content is usual more than 90%. Carbon fiber possesses excellent mechanical properties and the specific gravity is a quarter of that of steel. With the constantly improving and perfecting, superior performance of CFCMs has gradually been recognized. This review focuses on the characteristics of carbon fiber and its reinforced composite materials, and the application of CFCM in industrial products and new materials. The further development and application prospects of carbon fiber and its composites are further studied.
