Engineering and geomorphological map of Irpin: significance for engineering geological zoning and evaluation of the city construction

Abstract

The scheme of engineering-construction evaluation, which is created based on engineering geological zoning of city territories, is necessary among additional graphic materials in the design of master plan projects, as determined by state building codes. Engineering geological zoning provides a selection of different taxonomic units, having particular engineering and geological conditions that ultimately determine construction sites to a specific suitability category. A variant of synthetic large-scale engineering and geomorphological mapping applied to Irpin (Kyiv region, Ukraine) is built based on morphogenetic, morpholithologic, morphometric and morphodynamic data. The results enabled to determine different rank taxons of engineering and geological zoning, including small ones such as engineering and geological subdistricts according to their morphologic characteristics, and engineering and geological second order sites according to morphometric indexes. The results of engineering geomorphological mapping provided (i) an opportunity to determine the morphologic and morphogenetic conditions of Irpin, (ii) natural hazards spatial extent on new areas, and (iii) indications on relief elements that complicate the construction development. The assessment has become an ultimate result for both the complexity of engineering geomorphological conditions and geomorphological factors for the appropriate creation of construction evaluation scheme’s and corresponding measures’ selection of engineering training; such an assessment is also essential for the protection of Irpin territory and its problematic construction sites.
