Enhanced Fluorescence Detection of Interleukin 10 by Means of 1D Photonic Crystals

Abstract: In the present communication, we report on the exploitation of a Bloch surface wave-enhanced fluorescence scheme for the detection of Interleukin (IL)-10 in a protein-rich buffer mimicking a biological sample. IL-10 is a cytokine known for its potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. It is considered a valuable biomarker for prognostic prediction for both solid tumors and hematological malignancies, and recently, a distinguishing feature of hyperinflammation during severe viral infections. To de… Show more

“…We showed elsewhere 34 that the amplitude of the s peak is proportional to the total fluorescence intensity given by the integral of the curves shown in Fig. 4, if anisotropic photobleaching can be neglected and the relative amplitude of the s and p bands remains constant.…”

“…The developed sensor was able to detect IL‐10 cytokine from a protein sample, like the biological matrix with a detection limit comparable to that of the gold standard method (ELISA kit). The advantages of the proposed method were lower solvent consumption, reduced analysis time, and simplification of the analysis protocol 162 …”

“…The advantages of the proposed method were lower solvent consumption, reduced analysis time, and simplification of the analysis protocol. 162 The most recent examples of electrochemical sensors and biosensors reported in the literature were presented in Table 4. The analytical performances of the selected sensors for the detection of the target biomarkers were also included for comparison.…”

“…It showed good agreement with ELISA assays when tested with human plasma. The 1DPCs were also later employed by Occhicone et al (2021) for the quantitation of Interleukin (IL)-10 with a detection limit of 110 pg/mL [ 175 ]. This effect can additionally be used to study smaller phenomena—Sepe et al (2019) used the anisotropy of fluorophores on 1DPCs to examine the rotational diffusion kinetics of proteins bound to the surface [ 176 ].…”
