Enhanced lipid accumulation in microalgae through nanoparticle-mediated approach, for biodiesel production: A mini-review

Abstract: Nanoparticle application in microalgae for enhanced lipid production is an ongoing work that leads towards the contribution in biodiesel production. During this decade, metal nanoparticles are constantly being reported to have numerous applications in diverse fields, because of their unique optical, electrical, and magnetic properties. They can interact with the biomolecules of cells and thereby alters cellular metabolisms, which in turn reflects their ability to regulate some primary or secondary metabolic pa… Show more

“…Selenium Nanoparticles (SeNPs) have been proved to be an essential element in human as well as in lower plants such as algae, but in higher plants, though some beneficial activity has been observed still it is not proved to be essential ( Araie and Shiraiwa 2009 ; El-Ramady et al., 2016 ; Sarkar et al., 2021a ). At low concentrations (20–25 mg/L), SeNPs don't have any toxicity in higher plants, in fact, it promotes the growth and productivity of certain crops ( Gudkov et al., 2020 ; Bano et al., 2021 ) and also alleviates environmental stress ( Djanaguiraman et al., 2018 ; Morales-Espinoza et al., 2019 ; Soleymanzadeh et al., 2020 ; Shalaby et al., 2021 ).…”

“…Three main problems in algae-based biofuel production have been highlighted: supporting algae cultivation in different climates, the high water demand, and the technology deficit for commercialization. Nevertheless, the market is predicted to create future local and regional partnerships and collaborations with a view to maximize adoption and enable technologies for manufacturing them at a larger scale [ 60 ]. We can then conclude that this continues to be a raw material of extreme importance in the studies, and for the future, of the biofuel industry.…”

“…In this research, the impact of calcium oxide nanoparticles on Chlorella sp. growth was followed by daily recording of optical density (OD Tetraselmis suecica, to metal nanoparticles under different environmental conditions affects on several physiological or molecular changes, resulting in increasing the growth rate, biomass and lipid production [16]. However, the appropriate application of nanoparticles to assist algal growth is still nascent and the mechanisms, for the most part, are not well unknown [16].…”

“…The creation of oxidative stress by nanoparticles may be a potential for promoting algal growth and the accumulation of secondary metabolites [15]. For example, the exposure of Chlorella vulgaris to metal NP induces biochemical, physiological, or molecular modifications, thus stimulating the growth [16].…”
