Enhanced mid-infrared multi-bounce ATR spectroscopy for online detection of hydrogen peroxide using a supercontinuum laser

Abstract: A compact multi-bounce attenuated total reflection (ATR) probe combined with a Fabry-Pérot filter spectrometer (FPFS) has been developed for detection of hydrogen peroxide used for oxidative gas scrubbing operating in the mid-infrared (MIR) spectral region. A novel MIR supercontinuum light source is employed to enhance the quantification capabilities of the sensor and is compared to a classical thermal emitter. An improvement of a factor of 4 in noise and approximately a factor of 3 in limit of detection is sh… Show more

“…There is ongoing work on the development of supercontinuum sources in the NIR and moving to longer wavelengths; 324-328 although these are not portable at the present time, there are continuing investigations for their applications to spectroscopy, [329][330][331][332][333] including in the mid-IR. [334][335][336] Optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) 337 are another example of a broadly tunable laser-based source 338 and these have been used in laboratory spectroscopic imaging studies, 339 but are not available in a form suitable for a portable instrument.…”

“…Developing accurate, sensitive, rapid and selective methods to detect the concentration of H 2 O 2 , a normal oxidative stress biomarker, will be undoubtedly beneficial to the early diagnosis. Up to now, a host of analytical methods such as spectroscopy [6], colorimetry [7], fluorescence [8,9] and electrochemical methods [10][11][12] have been applied in H 2 O 2 determination. Electrochemical method, especially amperometric test is gradually becoming one of the most simple and effective detection methods for H 2 O 2 biological analysis among diverse sensing methods due to its advantages such as high sensitivity, outstanding selectivity and low cost.…”

“…6,7 The noise characteristics of supercontinuum generation, which had been a deterrent in their early days, were significantly improved since then. 8,9,5 Successful demonstrations of mid-IR supercontinuum based setups in a wide variety of noise sensitive applications [10][11][12][13][14][15] prove their practical suitability. Furthermore, it is expected that the trend of noise reduction will continue, e.g., by implementing the supercontinuum generation in an all-normal-dispersion regime, which is insensitive to the input pump noise delivering the enhanced shot-to-shot spectral coherence.…”
