Enhanced Stability and Oral Bioavailability of Cannabidiol in Zein and Whey Protein Composite Nanoparticles by a Modified Anti-Solvent Approach

Abstract: Wide applications of cannabidiol (CBD) in the food and pharmaceutical industries are limited due to its low bioavailability, sensitivity to environmental pressures and low water solubility. Zein nanoparticles were stabilized by whey protein (WP) for the delivery of cannabidiol (CBD) using a modified anti-solvent approach. Particle size, surface charge, encapsulation efficiency, and re-dispersibility of nanoparticles were influenced by the zein to WP ratio. Under optimized conditions at 1:4, zein–WP nanoparticl… Show more

“…The CBD extraction step was modified from the reference. [50][51][52] First, 20 µL 10M KOH was added to 100 µL serum and heated at 70 °C for 30 min, subsequently adding 5 µL formic acid left standing for 5 min. Next, 625 µL of ACN was added, mixed well, and ultrasonicated for 30 min, then centrifuged at 5000 G, 4 °C for 5 minutes.…”

“…For example, the storage stability of 7,8-dihydroxyflavone (7,8-DHF) was strengthened greatly after encapsulation in zein NPs, especially with the addition of glycosylated lactoferrin ( Chen et al, 2022 ). Similarly, zein NPs has been used to improving the storage stability of cannabidiol ( Wang et al, 2022a ), resveratrol ( Khan et al, 2021 ), curcumin ( Yuan et al, 2020 ) and others.…”

“…tiredness, diarrhea, and changes in appetite) [173], the number and extent of adverse effects may increase with the dose. Various formulations have been investigated to improve the solubility of CBD, such as the use of cyclodextrins [174][175][176], mesoporous silica [174], polymers [142,174], self-emulsifying drug delivery systems [177][178][179][180], and other nanoformulations [181][182][183]. By increasing CBD solubility, oral bioavailability can be enhanced.…”
