Enhanced Thermal and Dynamic Mechanical Properties of Synthetic/Natural Hybrid Composites with Graphene Nanoplateletes

Abstract: The aim of the present research work is to enhance the thermal and dynamic mechanical properties of Kevlar/Cocos nucifera sheath (CS)/epoxy composites with graphene nano platelets (GNP). Laminates were fabricated through the hand lay-up method followed by hot pressing. GNP at different wt.% (0.25, 0.5, and 0.75) were incorporated with epoxy resin through ultra-sonication. Kevlar/CS composites with different weight ratios (100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75, 0/100) were fabricated while maintaining a fiber/matrix weigh… Show more

“…This may be ascribed to the toughening effect by the nanoclay, which limited the movement of the polymer chain [ 44 ]. Besides, the stress can be effectively transferred from the nanoclay-modified epoxy matrix to the reinforcement fibers owing to the improved interfacial adhesion strength between fibers and matrix [ 45 , 46 ]. BK/E-OMMT displayed the highest E′ among all hybrid composites.…”

“…The addition of nanoclay reduces the magnitude of the peak height. This can be attributed to the interlocking mechanism between the nanoclay, fibers and epoxy, which restricted the polymer chain movement [ 46 ]. BK/E-OMMT exhibits the lowest tan delta peak height among all hybrid composites, indicating strong interfacial interaction, resulting in lesser energy dissipation at the interface [ 50 , 51 ].…”

“…In Figure 14 , the Cole–Cole charts are shown in order to analyse the connection between stored and loss heat energy for the studied samples. As [ 49 , 50 , 51 ] highlights, this kind of plot is useful to interpret the modification of viscous-elastic material with different reinforcement, as it is illustrated in Figure 14 a—the WPC samples. The mixture of wood particles with polyester matrix leads to relative homogeneity of composite by comparison to the FWPC and HMP samples which is visible from the shape of Cole–Cole curves.…”

“…Although natural fiber-based polymeric composites have existed since 1900, they did not gain much attention until the 1980s. However, nowadays, natural or green composites are extensively utilized owing to eco-legislation, and the benefits of natural fiber-reinforced composites, such as a high strength, modulus, and strength-to-weight ratio, as well as cost-effectiveness and biodegradability [2].…”
