Enhanced Web Service Matchmaking: A Quality of Service Approach

Abstract: With the increasing number of Web services, the Semantic Web research community is moving toward enhancing procedures so that clients may effectively discover appropriate Web services that maximally satisfy not only functional but also non-functional requirements. Using purely syntactic approaches to discover Web services has limited efficiency. Therefore, semantic matchmaking registries can play an important role in providing better results. However, most of the semantic registries make decisions based on onl… Show more

“…A number of dynamic service discovery approaches are already proposed by different researchers [ 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 ], considering context-awareness and quality of service criteria of the smart environments. The literature on service discovery approaches is quite large.…”

“…One of the biggest challenges for SOA-based service discovery techniques is to ensure the quality of service (QoS) in dynamic environments [ 59 , 60 ]. In this regard, considerable research [ 23 , 25 , 26 ] has been done to support dynamic attributes of services ranging from expanding Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI) to register dynamic attributes of services to store and manipulate dynamic attributes. However, the enhanced techniques do not involve QoS factors that can affect dynamic score calculation, resulting in compromised service selection.…”

“…Most of existing matchmaking frameworks such as [5] [38] utilize a strict capability-based matchmaking, which is proven [1][10] to be inadequate in practice. Some recent proposals, including [5] [16], propose to use semantics to enhance the matchmaking process but most of them still consider capability attributes only.…”

“…(2) use of capability-based matchmaking, which is proven [1][10] to be inadequate in practice; (3) lack of customization support; and (4) lack of accurate ranking of matching Web services, especially within semantic-based matching. These shortcomings are discussed in more detail in the next section.…”
