The continuing increase in dairy cattle farming poses a significant threat to the environment due to the release of greenhouse gases (GHG) from uncontrolled manure generation. Waste valorisation of dairy cow manure (DCM) through anaerobic digestion (AD) provides an avenue for simultaneously managing DCM and mitigating climate change through renewable energy. This review provides an overview of DCM production and the potential use of the AD processes for waste management and renewable energy generation in Fiji. Fiji dairy farms are geographically unevenly distributed and have considerably small herd sizes. With pretreatment techniques, biogas production from DCM at these farms has the potential to be optimised, economically feasible, and viable. Biogas production from DCM can be enhanced by approximately 125% with pretreatment techniques. Hence, this study reviews various pretreatment methods, their economic and environmental benefits, and AD's general challenges and limitations. This research reveals a need for further investigation into the optimisation of biogas and bio-methane potential of DCM, specifically with the economic viability and the environmental considerations of implementing these techniques at Fijian dairy farms.

This study investigated how anode electrode modification with iron affects the microbiome and electricity generation of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) fed with municipal wastewater. Doses of 0.0 (control), 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 g Fe2O3 per the total anode electrode area were tested. Fe2O3 doses from 0.05 to 0.2 g improved electricity generation; with a dose of 0.10 g Fe2O3, the cell power was highest (1.39 mW/m2), and the internal resistance was lowest (184.9 Ω). Although acetate was the main source of organics in the municipal wastewater, propionic and valeric acids predominated in the outflows from all MFCs. In addition, Fe-modification stimulated the growth of the extracellular polymer producers Zoogloea sp. and Acidovorax sp., which favored biofilm formation. Electrogenic Geobacter sp. had the highest percent abundance in the anode of the control MFC, which generated the least electricity. However, with 0.05 and 0.10 g Fe2O3 doses, Pseudomonas sp., Oscillochloris sp., and Rhizobium sp. predominated in the anode microbiomes, and with 0.2 and 0.4 g doses, the electrogens Dechloromonas sp. and Desulfobacter sp. predominated. This is the first study to holistically examine how different amounts of Fe on the anode affect electricity generation, the microbiome, and metabolic products in the outflow of MFCs fed with synthetic municipal wastewater.

The cattle stomach was considered as the basis for simulating a proposed operation. Microenvironmental degradation mechanisms are understood to be key to the efficient utilization of straw and other resources. Through dynamic tracking of the change law of heat generated by microbial degradation of straw in the cattle stomach, this study used an orthogonal test to explore the optimal ratio of feeding feed, the degradation mechanism in the microenvironment, and the characteristics of cattle manure and straw anaerobic fermentation. The results showed that the number of days of fermentation and the ratio of straw and cattle manure had a significant impact on methane gas production, and the mixture ratio was 1:3, at 26 °C; within 20 days, the cumulative gas production was up to 78.9 L. The results also showed that rumen microorganisms, cattle manure, and mixed straw fermentation can be used at different ratios to obtain the change of methane production, and determine the best ratio to achieve the maximum gas production.
