Enhancing the analytical capacity for biogas development in Brazil: assessment of an original measurement system for low biogas flow rates out of agricultural biomass residues

Abstract: This study presents a comparison of two systems for measuring low-flow biogas production rates. Grass silage was used as substrate in the experiment. Measurements were made by using (a) manual readings and (b) an automated system. The automated system proved to be efficient as it allowed readings of the biogas flow rates in real time. Results were stored in a computerized system with a safe access interface to download the recorded data at any desired moment. Furthermore, the systems also minimized the error r… Show more

“…The reactors were incubated in anaerobic conditions at 35 degrees Celsius (°C). Biogas measurements were performed according to procedures described by Konrad, Bezama, Prade, Backes, and Oechsner (). Methane content as a percentage of the biogas was measured daily with a specific methane measurement sensor (Advanced Gasmitter, manufactured by PRONOVA Analysentechnik GmbH & Co, Berlin, Germany).…”

“…The reactors containing the samples were kept at a mesophilic temperature (35°C) and connected to an automated biogas measurement system described by Konrad, Bezama, Prade, Backes, and Oechsner (). The quantity of biogas generated from the samples in the reactors was monitored daily through this system and the collected data exported to spreadsheets (data control; Exhibit ).…”

“…A quantificação de biogás em escala laboratorial vem sendo comumente realizada a partir da dinâmica do deslocamento de fluidos, já que apresenta baixo custo, simplicidade e confiabilidade para quantificar baixas taxas de fluxo (GIRARDI NETO, 2014;KONRAD et al, 2016;MARTÍNEZ-SIBAJA et al, 2011).…”
