Enhancing the plant layout design process using X3DOM and a scalable web3D service architecture

Abstract: This paper presents an innovative model-driven architecture enabling 3D web-based design processes in the field of large complex building (LBC) projects, such as power plant construction. This work was motivated by proposing new ways of achieving 3D CAD tasks not only for highly complex and temporary organization in the design stages but also for the whole lifecycle of such installations, which may last several decades. in this particular scenario, it is very important to share the right information with the r… Show more

“…Discrepancy between life spans of long-lasting products such are buildings and software tools used for their creation should not be reflected on digital product representations which are needed during the whole product life cycle. X3DOM technology can be used to represent geometry in web browsers and help with the plant layout design process [39]. They use a dynamic representation to store geometry information by recording the modelling history.…”

“…Similar web platforms with support for industrial size 3D models include solutions such as Autodesk 360 based on Autodesk Large Model Viewer which in turn is based on three.js, Bentley Web Navigator based on CesiumJS, and Instant 3D Hub based on a commercial version of X3DOM [Behr et al 2015;Mouton et al 2014], c.f. “…This mainly focuses on the interaction side of visualization and can be used for online collaboration as well as UI synchronization across devices or remote control. Interaction mode extensions to X3D/X3DOM concerning navigation and manipulation for web‐based CAD applications are also described by Mouton et al [MPJ*14]. However, as mentioned in the introduction, we will not further elaborate on interaction and collaborative systems as this is out of scope for this state‐of‐the‐art report.…”
