Enhancing the Toughness of Regenerated Silk Fibroin Film through Uniaxial Extension

Abstract: Films of regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) are usually brittle and weak, which prevents its wide application as a structural material. To improve the mechanical properties of RSF film, uniaxial extension under swollen conditions was employed to introduce preferred orientation of molecular chains of silk fibroin. Such a prestretching treatment resulted in the strain at break, ultimate stress, Young's modulus, and energy to break along the predrawn direction of the RSF film increasing from approximate 5%, 90 MPa, 2… Show more

“…27-29 In addition, after the membrane was stretched, its maximum absorbance shifted further toward 1630 cm −1 , and the birefringence also sharply increased (Fig. 2f), indicating the content of β-sheet molecular structures was significantly increased by stretching, agreeing with previous studies of natural silk materials 30-32 . As far as we can determine, the 1300% strain of our silk films is the highest strain value attained for silk materials (Fig.…”

“…Furthermore, the values of 1.1±0.6 and 1.5±0.6 GPa obtained for the 6mer and 6mer+BSP films are close to the values obtained for silk fibroin films, 2.7 GPa 40 but still far from the values of 20–22 GPa for stiffness attributed to the major ampullate dragline silk from the spider Nephila clavipes 41 . This difference indicates that there remains a lot to learn about processing and assembly of silk proteins related to functional properties.…”

“…However, the moduli of all three samples were similar. As SF possesses favorable mechanical properties, the improvements in mechanical properties following the grafting of SF were expected [19], while the modulus of the surface-modified samples was predominantly determined by the intrinsic chemistry of the bulk material, that is, PU.…”
