“…Various algae, including high vitamin content algae, high CO 2 tolerance algae, high lipid content algae, etc., have been reported to be capable of fixing carbon dioxide (Hanagata et al 1992;Becker 1994;Graham and Wilcox 2000;Pedroni et al 2004;Aresta et al 2005;Rengel 2008). Usually, algae selection is based on the project purpose.…”

“…It suggests that the two algae could be used to fix carbon dioxide of flue gas without complex pretreatment. A study on the fixation of the flue-gas carbon dioxide from a natural gas combined cycle power plant with Tetraselmis suecica cultivated in both the open pond and the closed photobioreactor, showed that algae productivity of the open pond system was higher than that of the closed photoreactor system (Pedroni et al 2004). It reveals that large-scale algae carbon dioxide fixation from flue gases is feasible; open pond algae cultivation systems are of the most potential for large scale algae cultivation.…”

“…Some of these systems have been used to cultivate Tetraselmis spp. (Tredici et al, 1996;Borowitzka, 1997;Pedroni et al, 2004;Chini Zittelli et al, 2006), and several species also have been grown on an industrial scale under heterotrophic conditions with yields in excess of 100 g/L per day (Day et al, 1991). Tetraselmis spp.…”

“…Biomass productivity was determined based on the ash‐free dry weight (AFDW) (g). The AFDW was used to calculate the areal productivity, which was determined by subtracting biomass concentration (g l −1 ) from that of the previous measured time point, multiplied by the reactor volume, and divided by the surface area and the number of days from the last AFDW measurement, expressed as g m −2 day −1 (Pedroni et al ., 2004). A subset of replicated experiments were sampled twice daily for bacterial 16S rRNA gene analysis to establish a baseline of typical phycosphere development at the RAFT experiment site.…”
