Enriched surface acidity for surfactant-free suspensions of carboxylated carbon nanotubes purified by centrifugation

Abstract: It is well known that surfactant-suspended carbon nanotube (CNT) samples can be purified by centrifugation to decrease agglomerates and increase individually-dispersed CNTs. However, centrifugation is not always part of protocols to prepare CNT samples used in biomedical applications. Herein, using carboxylated multi-walled CNTs (cMWCNTs) suspended in water without a surfactant, we developed a Boehm titrimetric method for the analysis of centrifuged cMWCNT suspensions and used it to show that the surface acidi… Show more

“…The π-plasmon absorption peaks at ca. 240 nm result from the excitation of the π-electron systems which are apparent in all sp 2 hybridised carbon materials [29]. In agreement with the results presented in this study, the relative increase in peak absorbance of the C-MWNCT in comparison to the MWCNTs was also determined in other work [30,31].…”

“…Furthermore, all concentrations of MWCNT-COOHs were freshly prepared in three types of aqueous medium: deionized water (pH 7.1), DMEM-F12 (pH 6.9-7.1), and DMEM-F12 supplemented with FBS (10% v/v) (pH 6.9-7.1). The refractive index of MWCNT-COOH used in DLS analysis was 1.891 [30]. SHEDs were obtained from Human Genetics and Cell Therapy Biobank (GENETEC) at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora.…”

“…[ 71 ] However, the bundled structure of SWNTs and poor solubility in solvents results in strong π–π interactions, thus restricting their applications. [ 72 ] Covalent chemical functionalization, [ 73–75 ] acid treatment, [ 76–78 ] noncovalent functionalization using hydrophobic interactions, [ 79–81 ] formation of supramolecular complexes in the presence of π electron‐donating compounds including pyrenes, [ 82 ] porphyrins, [ 83 ] and π‐conjugated polymers under ultrasonication are the ways to impart sufficient solubility in SWNTs. [ 72 ] Consequently, the interactions between SWNTs and π electron‐rich compounds can provide moderate solubility to SWNTs.…”
