Ensemble modeling of the potential distribution of the whale shark in the Atlantic Ocean

Abstract: The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is an endangered marine fish species which can be adversely affected by the fishing activities of the industrial purse seine fleet targeting tropical tuna. Tuna tend to aggregate around all types of floating objects, including whale sharks. We analyzed and modeled the spatial distribution and environmental preferences of whale sharks based on the presence and absence data from fishing observations in the Atlantic Ocean. We used a thorough multialgorithm analysis, based on a ne… Show more

“…The distinction is also often unclear in published papers (e.g. Brito et al 2011, Báez et al 2019. Filtering is a procedure to reduce the clustering of species records (Boria et al 2014) which frequently results from survey biases, as distribution data are collected more often from sites with easier access (Kadmon et al 2004, Barbosa et al 2010.…”

“…In the remaining methods, it is necessary to evaluate the correlations between variables and exclude redundant ones (e.g. Leroy et al 2014, Báez et al 2019, Pereira et al 2020. For example, in Maxent, using five variables often provides reasonable results (Peterson andCohoon 1999, Cumming 2000).…”

“…Use of SDM is the most common approach used to evaluate the effectiveness of protected areas in conserving species under climate change scenarios (Seo et al 2009;Araújo et al 2011;Hannah et al 2020), and the implementations of these models, as well as their uncertainties, have been extensively reviewed (Araújo and Guisan 2006;Heikkinen et al 2006;Elith and Leathwick 2009). One common approach to assess the impact of climate change on species distribution is identifying suitable areas in both present and future scenarios (Araújo et al 2004;Wang et al 2017;Báez et al 2019;Beaumont et al 2019). Nevertheless, the current distribution of a species is only a snapshot of a dynamic process that holds a historical legacy (Maguire et al 2015).…”

“…Applications of ENM to elasmobranch species to date have highlighted the potential for this technique to resolve uncertainty in the spatial ecology of this group (e.g. McKinney et al ., 2012; Sequeira et al ., 2012; Hacohen‐Domené et al ., 2017; Austin et al ., 2019; Báez et al ., 2020). For planktivorous species, the reliance on zooplankton means that their movements are strongly linked to changes in the biophysical environment that determine the distribution and abundance of their prey (Boucher, Ibanez, & Prieur, 1987; Richardson, 2008; Rohner et al ., 2013).…”
