Although much has been written about "socialization" and "emotion" in different cultures, these two topics have rarely been systematically combined and analyzed from the perspective of ontogenetic development.Drawing on approaches from developmental psychology and cultural anthropology, we examine how cultural models of emotion and their corresponding emotionally arousing child-rearing practices lead to culture-specific pathways of emotion development among the Bara (Madagascar) and the Tao (Taiwan). We focus especially on socializing emotions, which we define in terms of their function to orient individuals toward cultural norms and values and to inculcate social conformity. Based on empirical data gathered in long-term ethnographic field studies, we provide evidence that the Bara emphasize "fear" and the Tao "anxiety" as focal socializing emotions. [Socialization of Emotion, Fear, Anxiety, Madagascar, Taiwan] Cultures and societies vary greatly not only in how they shape but also in how they assign meaning and values to the basic emotional capacities rooted in our human biology. These become embedded in complex "feeling rules" that prescribe who may feel which emotions when, with which intensity, and in front of whom they should be expressed or suppressed. Most emotion research in the social sciences and cultural studies views the enormous interand intrasocietal polymorphism of emotional forms of behavior and expression as the outcome of complex bio-cultural and psycho-social interactions. A promising avenue into the bio-psycho-cultural modeling of emotions is research on the socialization of emotions. Investigating the explicit and implicit processes by which children acquire and reconstruct the emotional repertoire of their specific community provides insights into how biologically based human emotional capacities are realized by cultural practices and transformed into highly specific emotion systems. This notion of emotions as "bio-cultural processes" which, meanwhile, is widely shared within social and cultural anthropology (e.g., Hinton 1993Hinton , 1999Leavitt 1996; Svasek and Milton 2005;Röttger-Rössler and Markowitsch 2009), calls for interdisciplinary research in order to grasp the complexity of human emotionality. This renewed interest in bio-cultural interactions within social and cultural anthropology is fostered by recent advances in neuroscience that consider the brain to be a "biosocial organ" (Gibson 1996:36), evolved to be shaped by environmental influences, a process in which emotions play a central role (e.g.

Es ist der langjährige Verdienst von Birgitt Röttger-Rössler, dass wir heute im deutschsprachigen Raum das Forschungsfeld der Psychologischen Anthropologie vorfinden, die sich nicht zuletzt mit der soziokulturellen Spezifität des Emotionalen und Affektiven beschäftigt. Anhand indonesischer Fallstudien vermochte Röttger-Rössler aufzuzeigen, dass sich emotionales Erleben und Verhalten durch komplexe biokulturelle Prozesse ausbildet und dass es unzulässig ist, das Spannungsverhältnis von Biologie und soziokulturellem Kontext zugunsten eines einzelnen Faktors aufzulösen. Sie verstand früher als die meisten mono-disziplinär ausgerichteten Forscher:innen, dass Biologie und Kultur in keiner hierarchischen Beziehung zueinanderstehen, sondern sich vielmehr gegenseitig bedingen (Röttger-Rössler 2002, 2004; Röttger-Rössler und Markowitsch 2009). Eine wichtige Erkenntnis von Röttger-Rössler ist, dass menschliche Gefühle nur interdisziplinär in ihrer ganzen Vielschichtigkeit erfasst werden können und dass sich die Sozialund Kulturanthropologie nicht auf einer kulturrelativistischen Position ausruhen kann, sondern kulturvergleichend vorgehen muss (Röttger-Rössler 2002, 2020). Dieser Beitrag basiert auf dem bi-disziplinär angelegten Forschungsprojekt Sozialisation und Ontogenese von Emotionen im Kulturvergleich, das zwischen 2009 und 2014 am Exzellenz-Cluster Languages of Emotion an der Freien Universität Berlin angesiedelt war und gemeinsam von der Anthropologin Röttger-Rössler und dem Entwicklungspsychologen Manfred Holodynski geleitet wurde. Die zentralen Fragestellungen lauteten: Wie erlernen Kinder das emotionale Repertoire ihrer Gesellschaft? Welche Emotionen spielen im Sozialisations-und Erziehungsprozess eine gewichtige Rolle? Um dies zu erforschen, führten meine Kolleg:innen Gabriel Scheidecker, Susanne Jung und ich zwischen 2009 und 2012 stationäre Feldforschungen bei den Bara in Madagaskar, den Minangkabau in Indonesien und bei den Tao in Taiwan durch, die über eine Dauer von mindestens 12 Monaten verfügten. Bislang liegen nur Kulturvergleiche zwischen den Minangkabau und den Bara (Röttger-Rössler et al. 2013) sowie zwischen den Tao und den Bara (Funk et al. 2012; Röttger-Rössler et al. 2015) vor; eine alle drei Gesellschaften umfassende Analyse steht noch aus. In diesem Beitrag möchte ich mich auf systematische Weise mit den primären sozialisierenden Emotionen in den drei von uns untersuchten soziokulturellen Settings beschäftigen: mit "Furcht" (tahotsy) bei den Bara, "Angst" (maniahey) bei den Tao und "Scham" (malu) bei den Minangkabau. Mein besonderes Augenmerk richtet sich dabei nicht so sehr auf einzelne emotionale Qualitäten, sondern auf komplexe, emotionale und affektive Dynamiken, die auf vielfältige Weisen mit diversen soziokulturellen Parametern und naturräumlichen Kontexten verbunden sind. This Element explores multi-faceted linkages between feeding and relationship formation based on ethnographic case studies in Morocco, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and Costa Rica. Research demonstrates that there are many culturally valued ways of feeding children, contradicting the idea of a single universally optimal feeding standard. It demonstrates further that in many parts of the world, feeding plays a central role in bonding and relationship formation, something largely overlooked in current developmental theories. Analysis shows that feeding contributes to relationship formation through what we call proximal, transactional, and distal dimensions. This Element argues that feeding practices can lead to qualitatively distinct forms of relationships. It has important theoretical and practical implications, calling for the expansion of attachment theory to include feeding and body-centered caregiving and significant changes to global interventions currently based on 'responsive feeding.'
