Enterococci: An Important Nosocomial Pathogen

Abstract: Enterococci, particularly Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium, are an important cause of nosocomial infections and have become a major issue worldwide. Nosocomial infections due to vancomycin resistant Enterococci (VRE) occur frequently. A significant increase in prevalence of VRE has been reported recently in many countries. Enterococci are second most frequent cause of nosocomial urinary tract infection, bacteremia and infective endocarditis. They are also related to etiology of intra-abdominal an… Show more

“…In recent years, among the MDR bacteria responsible for nosocomial infections, the Enterococcus spp. received particular attention due to its ability to cause urinary tract infection, bacteremia, and infective endocarditis [ 8 , 9 ]. Enterococci are Gram-positive, opportunistic microorganisms that normally inhabit the human gastrointestinal tract [ 10 ].…”

“…Enterococci are the second most frequent cause of bacteremia, nosocomial urinary tract infection, infective endocarditis, gastrointestinal, intra-abdominal, pelvic, and oral infections. Enterococcus faecalis has become an important microorganism in public health because of multidrug resistance in VRE [ 35 ].…”

“… 37 Similarly, the Enterococcus genus has also been found to be predominant in COVID-19 patients, signifying its potential involvement in the disease process. 38 These findings emphasize that microbial composition dysbiosis was more prevalent in the Delta infected patients and its mortality outcomes.…”
